Entering kindergarten is a huge step for every child and every parent. In fact, those first few days might be much harder on you than them. While you just went through the steps of enrolling them, you may be wondering, how will my child do? Is he ready? Does he know enough of the basics to do well?
Read the list below to learn if your child is ready, and if he is not, you may consider kindergarten readiness tutoring to prepare him or help him get a head start.
Counting and Numbers – Your child should be able to recognize the number 1-10 and count to 20.
Alphabet – Recognizing all the letters is not yet required, but your child should be able to say the alphabet before entering kindergarten. It is best if your child recognizes some letters and even knows some sounds letters make.
Writing Her Name – Your child should know her name, recognize it when written, and even be able to write her first name herself.
Parents Name – A kindergarten child should know his/her parent’s names and it is best if they have also memorized their phone number.
Listening to Stories – Your child should be able to listen to stories (when a book is being read) as well as being able to hold a book and turn the pages.
Colors – Your child should know the basic colors.
Shapes – Your child should know the basic shapes.
Potty Time – Your child should be comfortable with and have the ability to use the bathroom independently, including operating buttons, snaps and zippers. If not, practice at home. The more practice the better.
At Lake Norman Tutoring, we are here to help. We offer kindergarten readiness tutoring to help give your child a jumpstart or fill in any gaps they may need before fall arrives. When it comes to reading, writing, and math, there is no such thing as being too prepared – the longer they practice before kindergarten, the better! Your child will also benefit from experiencing the academic setting with our tutors as preparation for the classroom setting.
