At Lake Norman Tutoring, we have a deep skill set for working with young children due to our backgrounds in speech-language pathology. While a majority of the preschool age children in our area have access to wonderful early childhood education and rich experiences with their families, giving them the tools to succeed in school, there are many benefits of Pre-K tutoring.
It is common to expect that children have the following academic foundation when entering kindergarten:
- recognize and name basic shapes: square, circle, triangle, and rectangle
- recognize and name numbers 1-10, even when they are out of order
- count to 20
- count 10 objects, pointing to each one as she counts
- say or sing the alphabet
- recognize the letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase (even out of order)
- identify colors in an 8-ct crayon pack
- recognize her first name
- write her first name
- sort items by size, color, or shape
- hold a book and turn pages
- tell if two words rhyme
- identify some letter sounds
- say her parents’ full names and phone numbers (at least one)
Children may have some, but not all of these skills. Pre-K tutoring can help them develop some of this skills in time for the strongest possible kindergarten entry. Other skills needed to participate in Kindergarten include those related to self-care (putting on coats, tying shoes, toileting), social skills like sharing, listening, following directions, waiting, raising their hand for attention, class routines, standing in line and tool manipulation with scissors, pencils or putting away materials. Support with some of these other Pre-K skills can also occur in individual tutoring opportunities as they related to more academic skills.
Give Your Child a Head Start
Beginning school is a major transition for every child (and their parents). This transition brings with it a lot of new experiences, such as being in large groups of children, following multiple-step instructions, and building the foundation of their life-long education with basic skills such as reading, writing, and comprehension.
With Lake Norman Tutoring, your child can get a head start in reading, writing, and math while building the necessary classroom skills for early success. Work with foundational concepts (i.e. colors, shapes, location names, following directions, foundational literacy skills, symbol recognition, counting, and pre-writing are all areas we can strengthen through developmentally appropriate activities while providing structure similar to a classroom demands. These vital skills will allow them to begin kindergarten with confidence, making the transition that much easier.
If you have your sights set on a specific private school that can be difficult to get in, Lake Norman Tutoring can devise a plan related to your child’s skills and areas identified for improvement.
Special Needs and Young Fives
We love working with children who have special needs. Whether your child already receives speech therapy or other developmental therapies, the additional support of Pre-K tutoring can further develop their potential before entering their first year of school. We can help your child build skills in key areas that are vital for academic success and enjoyment, such as comprehension, following multi-step instructions, expressing their ideas clearly, social, and problem-solving skills. Pre-K tutoring can complement the goals of existing therapies while focusing on skills targeted to improve the likelihood of academic success.
If your child was born in the summertime, you might be hesitating in starting him/her in Kindergarten at the age of five. Depending on your child’s unique personality and skill set, this decision might be a terribly difficult one. At Lake Norman Tutoring, we can address specific concerns you have with your four-year-olds development and academic skills.
